The joy of Pencil and Paper

Untitled (Motherfucker), Marcel van Eeden, 2009

Summer is here, which means the season of the group show at galleries around town. These can often be a teensy bit boring for viewers, but Poppy Sebire is currently showing a cracking exhibition of drawings and sketches by the likes of Chris Ofili, Michael Raedecker, George Condo and more, which is well worth a visit...

Curated by artist Danny Rolph, who also has a piece in the show, Pencil and Paper includes original and rarely-seen works by 14 artists, including new pieces by Raedecker and Ofili. A number of preparatory sketches for more complex artworks are included, but what unites the work here is both the medium, as well as a particular rawness and intimacy that is present throughout the exhibition.
